What is Food for Families?


It is an annual community-wide food and fund drive sponsored by the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. The event can be held for a day, a week or a month, anytime between February 8 and March 5. Schools, businesses and organizations compete to see who can collect the most food or money. Awards are given to first, second and third place winners in each category. In 2009, 53 participants collected 32,759 pounds of food and $82,343. We want to beat last year's figures!

What are the categories for competition?

  • Pre-schools
  • Elementary schools
  • Middle schools
  • High schools
  • Combined schools
  • Colleges/universities
  • Career Colleges
  • Organizations, clubs and foundations
  • Businesses with less than 50 employees
  • Businesses with 50 - 200 employees
  • Businesses with more than 200 employees

How do you determine the winner?


The winners are determined by dividing the pounds of food they collect by the number of employees, students or members in their organization. This results in pounds per person. Every dollar counts as two pounds of food. The participant with the most pounds per person wins!

Where does the food go?


The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization founded in 1981. The food collected comes into the Food Bank, is sorted and boxed by volunteers, and then made available to our 460 partner programs throughout 24 counties in Eastern Oklahoma. These programs include food pantries, emergency shelters, after-school programs, soup kitchens and senior citizen centers.
